WINTER HEALTH-THINGS OLD AND NEW

Every old mountain remedy is not for everyone, however, i’ve found over the years the remedies of old family doctors, grandmothers and mountain folk in general had served me well.

Winter is almost here and I’m on a kick to stay healthier than last winter.  Our old family doctor (who was Harvard Medical) use to tell my mother that if she didn’t want colds, earaches, and other crud in the house all winter to make us take Cod Liver Oil every day.  I’ve done if for years and it’s been effective.  I’d only had 1 cold in the past 35 years and the flu only once in my life (no flu shots).  Of course every system is different but this old remedy is a staple of mine.

As a further point….I move back to the Crater and have NOT been taking it.   I’ve now had “Crater Crud” (bronchial infections)  8 times in 18 Months.  So I ordered up today.

As children we hated it because there was only the oil…big yuck.  However, now we can order in lemon flavor oil or gel tablets.  Get the good stuff.  An added plus is the Omega 3’s are heart healthy as well.

An added plus now being recommended is Coconut Aminos.  These come from coconut sap and have sea-salt added.  It is packaged as a condiment to use as a Soy substitute but no soy or gluten.  It’s good for people with allergies it is low sodium and  GMO free.  Find it at health food stores or online.

As always, the Crones admonish you to be a mature and informed consumer.  Check it all out for yourselves.  I have more stay healthy items in my frig  and kitchen cabinets than in the medicine cabinet.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY-BLESSINGS

It’s that time of year again when leaves fall and all of nature makes the necessary changes to survive the winter doldrums.  But I  ask you to look around at the beauty that all of this brings.  Everything working in perfect rhythm to preserve the earth for what is needed to safely awaken in Spring.  The Sky is blue, the clouds are puffy and everything is dancing in perfect harmony within the “Grand Design”.

Blessings come in so many ways. One of this Crone’s favorites are the blessings of Mother Nature. You are never without a Mother if you respect her presence and blessings in all of life’s design.

RECIPE OF THE DAY-Balsamic Roasted Fennel & Acorn Squash Rice Casserole

So, after my thought for the day today, I got hungry and decided we should be posting recipes with our thoughtful diatribe of wisdom as well.  Today let’s look to the holidays for a great side dish suggestion.

Ingredients-8 servings

  • 1 acorn squash – cut in half lengthwise, seeded and cut into 12 wedges

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or non-stick foil.
  2. Remove the skin from the squash with a vegetable peeler (if desired). Cut each wedge in half and place in a large bowl along with the fennel pieces.
  3. Whisk the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, rosemary, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl. Drizzle mixture over the squash and fennel; toss to coat. Transfer squash and fennel mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and spread out to form a single layer.
  4. Roast until squash is tender, about 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, prepare the rice as directed on the box. Mix the roasted squash and fennel with the rice. Transfer to a greased casserole dish. Top with the chopped parsley and keep warm until served.

What is Respectful Irreverence Anyway?

We’re Crones, we can make it anything we want. However, generally speaking, it is a salty, robust, often sarcastic look at life in general.  It is not meant to delineate any person or thing as a target …but rather ALL persons and things that daily irritate the masses, piss us off, or show all the undeniable markers of stupid and/or mean spirited.

You know who you are.  We have our discerning eye on you.  Divas, Goddesses, & Crones everywhere, people need your discernment and wary protection. Speak up, make a difference… without intent of harm, but rather the intent of respectful irreverence.  Point out the obvious, scold the deserving and kick ass and take names to the bullies.

That’s it more or less!

IS IT JUST ME?- THE PRONOUN “I” & “Me”

When was the last time you had a conversation with someone who looked you in the the eye, listened intently, and seem genuinely interested in what you were saying? Almost seems uncomfortable for some of us..right?? We stayed glued to our cell phone (key work Cell for prisoner), we text or email rather than call and certainly cannot think of have a one on one conversation wit someone.  I’m to busy, I have errands to run, I need to get to the mall, I need to pay my bills, I need to check on my family and on and on.  It’s all about me and my four and no more…..

All valid things to place in ones itinerary….but at the loss of being human? Then we don’t understand why when we are in need of an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on or someone just to sit around and “chew the fat with” no one is available.  No one seems to care about our needs or difficulties. And why… because they are too busy telling you I’m to busy, I have errands to run, I need to get to the mall, I need to pay my bills, I need to check on my family and on and on.  It’s all about me and my four and no more…..

It is a catch 22! The bottom line is we all have the same time in a day.  We should schedule listening and human compassion for  others in the world beside our immediate tribe.  Or even schedule more eye time with members of our tribe.  Bottom line we have to make time. By the giving of “time” one of the most valuable commodities in the world, we get back 100 fold. My pal crone Lindsee Ellesmere is one of those rare humans who listens to you, laugh’s with you, gets fashimilt with you, and just all around supports your stupidity when you do not deserve it.  I strive to be more like her.  You should too.

Stop, take a breath, and listen to at least one soul trying to tell you a story today.   It may be sad, it may be stressful, it may be they are asking an unanswerable question, or just wanting to share a funny story to make you laugh.  Take time to really listen (don’t sit there planning a response ). They may not even want you to speak at all …just listen.  Try being human again for a few minutes. The rewards are inexplicable and refreshing.

Please don’t misunderstand, we Crones know a “psychic sponge” when we hear one and do not let them waste our time telling the same sad tale,  story of assaches and woundettes over and over again.  We are not required to do that. We know how to be discerning as Crones, Divas, and Goddesses.  However, love yourself enough today to listen to one story of any type.  Be in the moment and let the Universe give you the right response and reward.

The Crones Love You All.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY-BLESSINGS

When you have been around as long as this Crone you recognize brilliance and honor those who make the tapestry of life so fascinating.  I am blessed to be teaching some brilliant young minds right now.  I find its the same when I was training adult learners for a fortune 100 company for years.  You need to observe the crop and pick out the best crop to tend.  It is not always the tallest stalk, or the thinnest stalk, the stalk with the same growing pattern as the rest, or the stalk that looks like all the rest.

Sometimes the thoroughbreads are the shorter, rounder, stalks with a sturdier soul and a quicker wit. Find the stalk that starts growing in the mail room but blossoms best when placed in front of a computer or behind a TV camera.  The stalk that when transplanted yields outstanding results year after year. However, had we not taken the time to see that stalk, and help transplant it to better soil (more challenging environment) it would have wilted and died.

Don’t pass up the productive stalks because you only look a the tall stalks hogging the sun.  Really look at your crop and handle it according to its individual need.  I’ve been blessed with a brilliant “Diva Brigade” wherever I worked in corporate America.  The saucy, articulate, sassy Divas that are the core of all organizations (even though the corporations still don’t know that).  If you want a team effort to work, your own company to flourish, or just to surround yourself with people who will make a difference in your life; find the divas, the goddesses, the old crones and befriend them (if you are lucky they’ll let you).  These are humans with very sensitive baloney meters.  You cannot fool them for long ….if at all.  But if you are lucky enough to have one call you friend you have arrived in life. And note…the crop around them flourishes better than the rest… and produces the most excellent output.  Fact!!!

RECIPE OF THE DAY – CHICKEN SOUP

GOOD FOOD AND GOOD MEDICINE ( or so most moms say). Grandmother Crone is suffering with a bout of Crater Crud this week.  All old crones know soup, especially chicken soup, is good for what ails you.  Try this recipe for a tasty treat.

Serves 8

1 1/2 tsp.               Olive Oil

1 med.                  Onion (diced)

1 tsp.                    Dried Thyme

1 tsp.                    Dried Rosemary

16 oz.                   Roasted Chicken Shredded

2 Cups                 Carrots Sliced

2/3 Cups              Celery thinly sliced

2 (32Oz)              Containers of Chicken Stock (preferably organic)

1 1/2 Cups           Orzo Pasta

1 tsp.                    Kosher Salt

1 tsp.                    Cracked Black Pepper

Heat oil in a large Dutch Oven or Sauce Pot to medium high; sauté onion, celery and carrots until tender.  Then add stock, thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper and chicken to vegetables.  Add pasta at the end and cook until tender. Reduce Heat and simmer on medium low for 30 min.  Serve with toasted crostini points topped with melted gruyere or jack cheese.
